about "Editing" in the sidebar

I agree that the current structure may be improved. I wrote once the tutorial on SMW in Russian (try to use Google translate if oyu're interested) and found that it's pretty natural to switch from editing to viewing and to queries and back again.

Do you think anyone would mind terribly if I swapped a couple of things in the template, as suggested above? I think that it would help those that are new to SMW. The way things are laid out now, newcomers are first confronted with information that they can't apply in practice until they've come to a later chapter in the documentation.

I guess it depends on what you want to convey. If I understood correctly you would like to move the "Edit" block to the top to be in second position after the "Introduction" and before the "Browsing interfaces" block. Why not?
