Mermaid with SMW

Hi Karsten, I have started the page User:Tenbergen/Mermaid with SMW.

It likely doesn't follow any of your standards or vision for this wiki, but I just fought my way through figuring this out and wanted to share. I wonder if Mermaid should also have it's own extension page like Extension:GraphViz but didn't know enough about the structure behind this wiki to put it there as needed. Also, wasn't sure what the status of the Gantt format is, so figured I'd leave that one alone. If you want me to try to turn this into an extension page or a help page, just give me a pointer.

05:41, 20 March 2019

Hi Tina, I am a bit "getrieben" at the moment. This is on my list. I guess I will have a look after this wiki moved to the new server. Cheers

19:25, 25 March 2019

Hi Karsten, just pinging this since some time has passed, and I just realized that a user sub page doesn't even show in the default searches. Do you mind if I move it over to the main space for now and you can always overwrite/delete it once you have something better?

06:54, 24 April 2019

Hi Karsten, you reverted my edit without explanation. According to the toolbar on the right, the format is not enabled by default. Whether or not that should be in a callout is a separate issue, but if there is a callout, shouldn't it be consistent with the infobox?

02:29, 2 March 2019

This is my comment for the change:

(Undo revision 68593 by Tenbergen (talk) Since SRF 2.5.3 it is enabled by default again. See https://github.com/SemanticMediaWiki/SemanticResultFormats/blob/2.5.3/DefaultSettings.php#L46) [rollback] (Tag: Undo)

For something like this I do not regularly add a notification to the talk page since this comment should be verbose enough.

Yes, the callout should be consistent to the infobox. In the end one has two choices to do the change. Thanks for the pointer.

interwiki links

Thats me again.

I was having a look at some translations and found a new question. At our mediwiki spanish article, Artículo sobre MediaWiki en Wikipedia points to the english version of the article in wikipedia ( which is arguable much better than the Spanish one but, anyway, in English). Can I point to the Spanish one? Or, do you have other languages interlink codes?

Best Regards

I am just working on it as we speak. :) I will add a respective hint to the translation docu.

I just notice that if you write the standar wp:es:WHATERVER ARTICLE it works fine, and it links to the right wikipedia language project you need ( wp:de:WHATERVER ARTICLE for instance)

Translating template content, properties and category articles

Hi there

I am working on Anotaciones en linea, and it has

[[File: SMW statement.png | thumb | Figura 1: {{#show: File: SMW statement.png |?Has description }}]].

It gives

Figura 1:

"Has description" gives its version, which is in English, as was expected. I think it should be in Spanish, but I do not know what I should do about it.

This raises other question I am stuck with, wether I should translate names properties such as "Has Population" in the examples, or not.

And another one: should I create an article for "manual user/es" category. It is authomatically created, but has no text in it.

Best regards,

11:35, 29 March 2018

many questions and actually quite some work to make it happen. In order to get the Spanish translations in the file documentation needs to be translated. I have now added the respective file to the translation system. Moreover I adapted the code to automatically fetch the correct description as soon as it was translated for the file.

Via the translation system you will now also find the categories to be translated. e.g. "manual user/es" so please do not create them manually.

You can translate properties like "Has Population" within the docu as long as it displays example syntax. As soon as it is a live example the original names have to be retained.

Thanks a lot. I am on it. You are a crack, and you know it ;-).

More questions. I hope it is not a lot of more work for you. When I find an article with the old language template sistem, should I keep it, put the {{interlanguage}} template only in the spanish translation (would that even work?) or change the template in all the article translations?

I saw the spanish home page is back. Should anything be done to keep it updated to the english mainpage?

And that's all, I hope.

Best Regards

12:13, 30 March 2018

I'd say that you should keep the old language template system. I will change over to the new template as you go on translating. Changing over requires moving pages and some other stuff.

Do not worry about the Main Page. We will change to a new version soon and I will add it to the translation system. Thus you will be able to translate and adapt to changes as I publish them.

How does interlanguage work?

Edited by another user.
Last edit: 22:19, 22 March 2018

Hi there

I translated Help:Getting_support, a page out of the user manual, and found interlanguage is not working there. I think. I am doing something wrong, probably.

21:58, 22 March 2018

No you are not. It just does not play with the "language" template which I now removed form the page.

22:21, 22 March 2018

editing/es created

Hi there

I have moved Edición to Edición, but I cannot delete the bad one. Can you make sure we keep Edición, and perhaps delete Edición.

At the moment I am putting a redirect at Edición.

23:10, 11 March 2018

Hi, we should probably keep the old page but with a redirect. Currently the internet predominantly points to the old page and this will help avoid visitors following respective link ending up in void. Cheers

Titles in Spanish articles

Hi there

I have noticed that Spanish translation of the user manual gets to have the title translated, through the user manual template, but I cannot see how to do so for the rest of the articles. Can you help me?

Thanks a lot

14:05, 6 March 2018

Heiya, this is indeed not clear. Thanks for asking. You can do it as I have done it with this edit. Ultimately I should add these pages to the translation system. Cheers

Reviewing my translation

Hi there

I am trying to translate something on a daily basis and I am getting around quite well.

I have no dudes about the language, but it is not so easy for me to work out the templates. Would you be so kind as to have a look at the articles? Knowing when I should translate something, or it is a script and should be left as it is, is getting hard sometimes.

Is there an article on the structure a page should have, such as docinfo, infobox, categories, etc...?

Thank you for your patience

19:43, 23 February 2018

thanks for reaching out to me and to continue with the translations. Indeed the templates are the best a wiki has to offer but at the same time lead to complications too.

I have not looked at what you were trying to do and I believe this change and that change are the ones you were looking for.

Just imitate to get along well.

Bitte um Ergänzung von set Describes_Type in Template Datatype

Hallo Karsten,

habe gerade das Property:Describes_Type angelegt mit dem zu einem Property die Special-Property Seite abfragbar sein soll zu dem ein Datentyp gehört. Das Template: Template:Datatype zeigt zwar die Information mit

In this wiki: || [[Special:Types/{{{datatype name|}}}|{{{datatype name|}}}]]

an, speichert die Information aber nicht in einem Property. Für ask queries wi die list of Datatypes wäre es eine deutliche Vereinfachung wenn in dem Template die Zeile:

{{#set:|Describes Type=Special:Types/{{{datatype name|}}}}}

hinzukommt. Leider kann ich das Template nicht selbst editieren. Ich würde aber anschliessend die Queries anpassen, so dass man in den Tabellen direkt zu den Special-Pages gelangen kann und so besser die Verwendung eines Datatypes nachvollziehen kann.

Vielen Dank!

Erledigt, nur habe ich "Has datatype page" als Attributnamen gewählt, um nicht noch eine dritte Namensvariante ins Boot zu holen.

Danke - das hilft.

16:57, 2 February 2018

Hi Karsten,

Would you mind if I added a little widget? I don't have the rights to create or edit anything in the Widget namespace.

00:31, 26 December 2017

Hi Dennis,

no, I just made you an widgeteditor. I case it is still not working you could post the code for me to copy.

While "we" are now at it redoing the system of adding sites useing SMW we should add them to a designated namespace which I have just created with the name "Site". Thus it will be cool if you could move the site over to the new namespace.

I guess the new form could just be named "Site" but that's probably already overoptimizing things.

Thanks a lot for your effort.

19:02, 27 December 2017

Thanks! I've moved some pages to the new namespace until a security throttle was reached.

About those keywords: rather than sending visitors directly to the elaborate and potentially confusing Special:Ask, it would be great if we had a dedicated page with a simple interface. A tried recipe, at least for me, is to have a page like that read the relevant keyword from the url and to show other keywords in a separate panel for further queries. The Urlgetparameter extension (not currently installed) is a simple tool that allows you to implement this. Special:Ask could be kept in there as a sort of advanced mode, of course.

Whether or not this can be used in conjunction with the Filtered format is something I'm curious to find out, but pending a number of future fixes it may not be a terribly good idea to give it such a prominent role (yet).

11:16, 28 December 2017

You must have been really fast moving stuff. Since no extra throttle was configured for moving you must have hit a default set by MediaWiki core. Keep on fighting.

About the keywords: I have now installed the UrlGetParameters extension to allow your approach work. However, the set query feature which works with templates should allow for a similar solution too. A searcher is indeed forwarded to special page Ask but the template view allows to also serve keywords which are again doing a set query. Thus the user does not really have to do anything than to hop from keyword to keyword and explore the different results.

Anyways, thanks for your effort and I am curious to see how it will work out.

Why does not the Brazilian Portuguese language appear in the sidebar?

17:31, 4 December 2017

Sorry, I already found it.

17:33, 4 December 2017

No worries. This is an either or situation. Either we have it in the sidebar (new way) or we have the navigation at the bottom of the page (old way). However going the new way requires some work from my side which I have not yet allocated time for.

17:35, 4 December 2017

thank you

The homepage is still untranslated

16:09, 19 November 2017

It was translated but not showing up. The classic template no longer works. That's why we have the interlanguage links in the sidebar until the main page was completely redone.

homepage translation

the homepage translation disappeared

03:25, 15 November 2017

Good pick, thanks for the note. We were hiding the page titles via DISPLAYTITLE so they vanished from the links to. A pretty bad idea. The links should soon pop up again. Cheers

User manual

Once [0] has be resolved and deployed the user manual tree should be auto-generated from the annotated values according to Template:User manual.

I did change the first view items, to show case how the hierarchy is build together with an arbitrary sort key per level to order (rank) those in a group by key and not by title.

Those pages should contain another factbox template (as done in Importing vocabulary) for any other auxiliary information but the overall manual navigation should be confined to Template:User manual.

If possible get rid of the docinfo template or somehow make it invisible as it distracts the reading flow. If we want to show version and document status, maybe using the page indicator is a better approach.

PS: I just got fed up with the navigation this morning while looking for some information!

Request translator permissions

Heiya, Kghbln

I would like to do some translation for SMW. Thanks.

Heiya Lin, I thought you already were granted the translator permissions. Done now. Thanks a lot for your involvement. Cheers

Heiya kgh,I appreciate your timely permission. Cheers.

Translation rights

Hi Kgh,
I saw that the translation extension has been installed on the wiki. Yet I don't have rights to translate. Is it possible to add them please? Thank you very much. Cheers!

09:13, 2 August 2017

Done. If you sign up here you will be notified about changes and new pages using the new translation system. You may coordinate with Wladek92. Cheers

09:17, 2 August 2017

Thanks a lot. I was (and still am) busy on my wikis, but now I can see all the power (and efficiency) of SMW. Cheers!

Properties and types language versions

Hi there

I have been working on properties and types and I am wondering why the language pages are so diferent?

There are as many versions as languages. I kept the English as my source, but I wonder any way. (I cannot read russian nor chinese)

14:35, 14 July 2017

Hi Amglez, the wiki is actually more or less undergoing reconstruction. The translations in the other languages are pretty old and display a former state of editing. If you stick to English you will not be wrong. Thanks for your work! Cheers

16:35, 14 July 2017

I was thinking if it would not be tidier to put translations as subpages, as in the mediawiki project.

Another question, how do I fill the docinfo template? author and master rev are my primary concerns. As I am not on the master page, I cannot use {{REVISIONID}}, can I?

Best Regards

11:58, 15 July 2017

You could very well use translations as subpages, e.g. Propiedades y tipos since this would help if we were to use the Translate extension on that page. Like this it is fine too.

About the docinfo template. On the translated page you are basically the one for support while Markus is still the original author. For master revision you add the revision number of the latest revision of the page you translated, like in this example.
