Keynote: From Semantic Wikipedia to Abstract Wikipedia
Talk details
Description: Fifteen years ago, Semantic Wikipedia was first proposed. This was the starting point for the development of both Semantic MediaWiki and Wikidata. This year, the Wikimedia Foundation is starting a new project, Abstract Wikipedia.

The overarching goal of all these projects is to make knowledge more accessible and easier to work with - to allow more people to share in more knowledge in more languages.

This talk will offer a quick look at the history of these projects, and look at how far we have come regarding this goal. It will identify some missing pieces and how Abstract Wikipedia will address them. We will introduce a new Wikimedia project, a repository of functions, which will launch next year. The repository of functions will unlock a new format of knowledge people can share in through the Wikimedia projects, functions, which will vastly expand what people can do with knowledge from Wikimedia, and provide a new venue to collaborate and to engage the creativity of contributors from all around the world.
