The purpose of editing semantic data in Semantic MediaWiki is to simplify common tasks for users of the wiki. Most importantly, SMW includes various features for browsing, searching, and aggregating the wiki's content. These range from the simple Factbox at the bottom of articles to the powerful semantic search the results of which can also be embedded into wiki pages via inline queries.

Many reading features of the wiki should be obvious to users. For example, numerical values using units of measurement will display tooltips with unit conversion. Further features are described in separate sections:
