The Parsoid project was started in 2011 to overhaul the core wikitext parser in MediaWiki in order to support next-generation editing and other capabilities. Now, a decade later, we are finally nearing the point where it will replace the old legacy Parser and enable further development of wikitext features. But the transition comes at a cost.
In this talk we will briefly describe the state of the Parsoid project, and the implications for MediaWiki extensions. We will explain the future architecture envisioned for wikitext processing in MediaWiki. We will touch on changes required to SMW link syntax and the Variables extension, and reserve half our time for a broad discussion of these and any other issues SMW and related extensions will have with the upcoming changes.
