Interdisciplinary collaborative research among researchers from various sciences requires a robust framework to manage large amounts of data produced. Structuring and semantically annotation of data and the documentation of its creation is essential to gain knowledge and fully leverage its potential. This allows preserving the context of data generation (provenance) and makes the data machine-readable and interpretable. To meet these requirements, we have designed a RDMS (Research Data Management System) that is deeply integrated with Semantic MediaWiki.
Our approach is utilized by the CRC 1368 (Collaborative Research Centre), which investigates oxide-free production technology, uniting multiple disciplines to explore material science, surface studies, and process development. Over 15 research project and research institutes from various subdisciplines of engineering sciences.
The transformation from Metadata4Ing ontology to the Semantic MediaWiki data structure is central to this approach, enabling a dynamic model that allows a formal, semantic representation of research steps, parameters and gathered data, while also providing flexibility in the generation of protocol templates and individual experiments through the reuse of semantic building blocks. Our use of "Generic Protocols" permits the construction of a scalable, adaptable documentation system. This system connects seamlessly with the CKAN research data repository and an electronic lab notebook, providing a comprehensive suite for data management that maintains a consistent semantic structure.
During our talk, we will showcase how these semantic building blocks have been instrumental in the RDMS of CRC 1368, focusing on the practicalities of their implementation and use, and their impact on documentation efficiency.
