Wikibase4Research, developed by the Open Science Lab at TIB Hannover, is a solution to simplify the use of Mediawiki software for knowledge bases. It automates the installation and configuration of Mediawiki, Wikibase, SemanticMediawiki and SemanticWikibase, which is particularly beneficial for users who want to create complex databases without the need for technical expertise or developers to save time with CI/CD processes.

Wikibase4Research provides a configurable Docker pipeline that installs not only the wiki platform itself but also additional essential services such as SPARQL endpoints, OpenRefine Reconciliation Service or Elasticsearch in a few minutes. It simplifies the installation and configuration of Mediawiki extensions by providing an easy to use extension management. It also includes automated data import, which significantly reduces manual effort. This also facilitates the transition from existing Wikibase instances to this new solution. Commonly used wiki configurations are available as presets, to allow users a quickstart of their projects with the possibility to later fine-tune their system configuration further.

Wikibase4Research is already being used successfully in various research projects, including Herrenhäuser des Ostseeraums, Semantic Climate and PhiWiki. It provides researchers with a powerful tool to efficiently manage, analyze and visualize data in digital research projects. Further developments in the Wikibase ecosystem are planned to further support digital research.
