Wikibase is a powerful tool to collaboratively manage structured data in a knowledge base but it lacks features for visualization within a wiki. Semantic Mediawiki supports such visualization of structured data but wasn’t designed for collaborative knowledge base management.
A connection between Wikibase and Semantic Mediawiki allows to get a strong feature combination from both systems. To achieve this, Professional.Wiki created a first prototype: “Semantic Wikibase” for Mediawiki 1.35 in 2020.
The OpenSciencLab of the TIB Hannover is part of the Wikibase Stakeholder Group. We highly appreciate the development of this tool, that allows rich wiki frontend creation based on Wikibase data such as for museums and other GLAM institutions.
To increase the technological readiness we further improved the existing project: Upgrade of Semantic Wikibase to support Mediawiki up to v1.39 (latest LTS version) Basic datatype support for EDTF (Extended date time format) and LocalMedia Support of Wikibase quantifiers Support of Mediawiki Categories Editing of Wikibase content via custom wiki Forms Docker pipeline for easy installation and extension management Automated wiki initialisation with data and content
These improvements enable Semantic Wikibase to be used as an end-to-end content management system for data maintenance, visualization and publishing based on knowledge base data.
