Actually they came up with a very interesting and useful solution: LiquidThreads I very much like it because it helps you to keep track of you conversations. The only downside is that it gets a bit messy if you have heaps of parallel conversations or if you are watching too many pages. --kgh 01:35, 21 November 2010 (CET)

Represneting dates

Hi I have just joined :) I was looking for help and suggestions about how to represent 'uncertain' dates in MediaWiki. Sometimes we only know roughly when a medieval writer was born, or that he died before or after a certain date. I haven't had much success in building anything workable here. docinfo vs docu templates

Hi there, Kghbln!

There is something weird is going on with two documenting templates: Template:docinfo and Template:docu. Look at the French page for introduction to SMW and the German one. At the the bottom of the French page I see the translations for English, Russian and Japanese languages. At the bottom of a German page I see the translations only for Spanish and Holland languages. Hi Katkov Yury, thank you for your message. The simple reason was that the Russian, French and English pages were already using the new docinfo whilst the Spanish, Dutch and German pages were still using the old docu template. It is not possible to mix the two templates on pages in different languages on the same topic. I just added the docinfo template to the Spanish, Dutch and German pages and now you can see all language versions. :) There is one important thing when utilising docinfo on another page than the English master page. You have to enter the revision number of the English master page you translated manually for the property "Docinfo master rev" instead of using the magic word {{REVISIONID}}. Otherwise the revisions will never match and have the desired effect to show just outdated pages (master revisison not equal slave revision). Cheers --[[kgh]] 15:33, 2 September 2011 (CEST)
A bit foolish question of mine: where can I find the revision number of the English master page? Is it the number that appears in oldid parameter in the Permanent link? No, that is not a foolish question at all. Yes this number is the revision id. In case you would like to know the revision id of specific version, you may just hover over the revision date in the version history of a page. Depending on the browser (not sure about IE ;) something like a "balloon" pops up somewhere in the browser telling you the revision id of this specific version. Except for rare cases this template is no problem at all. Pages using this template are predominantly as is and do not need updating, e.g. news items. The biggest exeception is the main page. However this one gets updated each month and thus we as translators do not really need reminders on this. Result formats category query issue

I want a little pet

Hi there! It's me again about docinfo and docu templates. I have exported all pages that transclude the old docu template from swm.org and ask a bot to convert them to docinfo on my little wiki. Hi Yury Katkov, I am just at SMWCon Fall. Thus I am not able to look into this in detail. Actually a task like this may already be done on this wiki with Ext:ReplaceText. However, this does not solve the problem of inserting all the other properties additionally needed or provided by docinfo. This is of course right, we need at least master rev. Still don't you think that converting all docu's to docinfo with only three parameters is still better than the situation that we see now - when some translated versions are not visible from the basic English pages? Appearance of obsolete parameter in docinfo

Another issue with docinfo: it's weird how the template handles th obsolete parameter. Take for examples these two pages: Help:Custom_units_1.5 and Help:Installation_1.5.3. In the second one we have horrible Template:docinfo/obsolete warningbox. Whe we don't have this box on a first page? --Yury Katkov 17:16, 26 September 2011 (CEST)

Good question! Next one please. ;) I do not think that this warningbox is too bad since it directly points to the relevant effective page. Some nice formatting and it should be very ok. What I cannot answer is why both pages show a different behaviour. Probably the semantic data used for the first page is not up to date. Avoid spam user creation

It seems their are a lot of spam users created, maybe Extension:ConfirmAccount should be used so that new accounts requires the approval by a bureaucrat.

Heiya MWJames, it is true that the spam problem proves to be persistent. I thought about ConfirmAccount too, but so far I was a bit reluctant. Probably it will be the solution of last resort. The new QuestyCaptcha generates an error if you try to create an account and then click the "more info" link. The error is

CSS and html errors

Hi, the table class forces a width of 100%. Since there is also the Adimin-TOC involved for the first table, it does not work. In the first table, all content of the 4th row and the 5th row are concatenated with the description of the 3rd parameter. This problem seems to have nothing to do with the table width or the web browser. Please note the page's rev version when you check it. Hi, as the matter of fact the parser function presently does not work at all. The reason is, that it is an new feature introduced with SMW 1.6.0. This wiki was not been updated so far. Add Cite extension?

Hi Kgh! I constantly feel the need of the tool for creating the references and footnotes. The user guide have many parts where it would be better to wrap the sentence in a footnote instead of distract the user's attention to many details. Take the Help:Inline_queries page for example. It focuses on wiki-editors that usually are not very much interested in performance and caching issues. In my opinion the note about that should be a footnote or expandable section.

During the translation I retell the article trying to make the ideas clear enough for Russian reader. Sometimes the 7-word sentence turn into the long-long paragraph. Here I need footnotes a lot more because there are many ideas worth consider that can distract the user from the main line of though during the manual.

The proposition is to install the Cite extension for footnotes. What do you think? Yury Katkov 09:58, 5 January 2012 (CET)

Bugs with Factbox

Hi Kgh! I'm sure that you have noticed that bugs yourself so that would be just a reminder. Something... no, everything is wrong with the Factbox on this wiki.

  1. First of all there is no borders between the Factbox table, no header of a table
  2. The RDF Feed is too close to the title of the Factbox
  3. When we click Preview on article edit Factbox appears and there is a cute piece of apparantly javascript code in the left upper corner appears. This code causes tears apart the tabs from the main wiki area and the result looks ugly.
  4. User:Ganqqwerty/testforbug - for some reason in this case docinfo template adds Factbox and the cute little piece of js appears on a saved page - that's serious and I couldn't repair it. __NOFACTBOX__ can't help here.

I've no idea how to repair Factbox without access to the wiki's code but I think that it's very important to fix it: it's the main wiki for SMW and everything should work ideally and perfectly here - especially the semantic stuff! -- Yury Katkov 10:50, 9 January 2012 (CET)

Access policy for editing . Reviewing.

Hi Karsten!

What do you think about user rights here? I mean, it's pretty weird:

  1. it's possible to anonymously (!!) edit pages located in all namespaces except NS_HELP
  2. most of the content is precisely on NS_HELP
  3. for a newbie user it's not possible to make even small changes (like fixing typos) in Help namespace, they have to contact admins for that

I'm writing for Wikipedia for some time as well as for other wikis and I always see the same pattern: people like to make very tiny changes and they make it. For example the grammar and punctuation in my Help pages are awful, some sentences looks awkward. I would be glad to see these mistakes fixed by the others - but to make changes in documentation one have to make too much operations.

My propositions:

  1. deny anonymous editing. It's spam most of the time. Probably it's reasonable to allow anonymous users to edit Talk pages - with CAPTCHA on editing.
  2. allow editing the Help pages for every registered user. It's risky, probably we can allow this right only to the users that have their personal page in NS_USER namespace.
  3. Enable reviewing with the help of FlaggedRevs extension. By default show to anonymous users the page that has been reviewed. This works perfectly on Russian Wikipedia although they are more liberal.

Hi, I think it is not necessary to change the current anonymous editing policy since it will have little effect. But allowing everybody who took the effort of creating a user page to be a contributor, seems fair enough to me. Why not giving them a trust bonus. In case they do bullsh we could still block them. We should not use FlaggeRevs since this is a monster. However, lucky us, Yaron created a new extension about 1 1/2 years ago to cater for small and medium sized wikis. Ok, FlaggedRevs is really easier to use. About anonymous guys - I see that Saruman delete some spam contributins and block anonymous spamers every day. What do you think about allowing anonymous most only after solving ReCaptcha? You mean ApprovedRevs. ;) I think semanticweb.org is as popular as semantic-mediawiki.org when it comes to the number of visitors, I even believe that we have more visitors here than they have on their wiki. The reason they are getting more spam is that they currently do not use the same spam techniques as we do. We switched from ReCAPTACHA to QuestyCAPTACHA mid November 2011 on this wiki and the number of spammers, no matter if IP or registered user went down by a felt 95 %. We do not really have a problem here with spam right now, since we have an active community of up to seven people who are watching this wiki on a regular basis and are admins. This is not the case with semanticweb.org, I suppose. And yes, I will do some cleaning up after a stronger CAPTCHA mechanism was introduced there. :) Before that it does not really make sense. Scenario portal

I deleted previous comments as there were no longer valid. Now, you can have access to the Scenario portal either by using the popup (see Gallery scenario) or running Special:RunQuery/Query/Scenario.

One minor thing, right now User:MWJames/data hosts the scenario data, which shouldn't be but the template namespace does not allow SMW properties so for the time being I leave at this until this is sorted and fixed.

If it isn't too much trouble would you add the following to the Template:Result format below Categories

Just delete the previous note since the reported problems are no longer valid due to the update to SF 2.4.1. You might have a look at the Survey portal, select a form, and make try run if you like. The user feedback form is accessible via Form:User feedback as member of Category:Survey form.

Special property

I saw you did some work on the special property page and created Help:Special property Has type. Just a thought but why not store those information directly in Property:Has type naturally people will look their first. Meaning that you get 2 for 1 combining hands-on explanations with examples. --MWJames 14:21, 16 March 2012 (CET)

When you just look at English it might be a solution to have it on the property page directly. Then it comes to other languages on this wiki this is not possible. I would rather have it consistent across all languages. Once there was documentation for datatypes in the type namespace too and it proved to be a lot of work to move it out of there. It is not likely that this will happen to the property namespace, but it proved to be no problem to have the documentation for types in the help namespace. I believe we will experience the same for properties so we may have consistency for them too. After all the property page shows just a list of properties as examples. I actually do not have commit access to SVN, or better written, to Git. MW moves to version control with Git tomorrow. My recommendation is to open a bug at bugzilla and upload the new file as a patch. Open the bug for the Semantic MediaWiki extension and not for i18n (just mention it in the subject line for the bug). Template:City
