Issues related to docinfo template

1. Someone have to dig into the template code - it's not very cool to use the things we don't understand
2. I'm not sure about some of the fields.
   1. The editor field is always set to REVISIONUSER - can it be omitted and be set automatically?
   2. Do we really need the author field? Maybe we can assume that the author is the guy who was the first editor?
   3. What about the priority field in translations? I think that translations should have the same priority as their master pages.
3. We need better documentation for docinfo parameters: remember by question about author, editor and support?
4. existing pages with missing on incorrect parameters in docinfo, like master rev={{REVISIONID}} in translations.
5. the above mentioned obsolete issue - I haven't started observing it yet.
6. internationalization of all messages in docinfo
7. delete the old docu template or somehow mark it as obsolete
8. some bot tasks on wikification: for example putting each docinfo parameter on a separate line and moving all docinfos to the end of the page (of course if we could handle the warningbox appearance on a top)
9. IDEA: maybe we can integrate the docinfo statistics and docinfo itself deeper with the site engine? It seems like a very useful and encouraging instrument for translators.
10. IDEA: it's also possible to notify the translators about the changes in English article more aggressively than the docinfo statistics do. --Yury Katkov 16:22, 5 October 2011 (CEST)

re 1) You are right, but this is not so much of a problem since the system works.

re 2.1) editor is indeed already set automatically. It may be omitted though. However I would like to see if somebody edited translated pages. I do not expect to be the only one for German translations forever

re 2.2) Year, you are right in most cases. Still there is a problem with imported master documentation. I these cased I did wild guessing too. 8~| However, I believe we should attribute the authors semantically too. This is a little bonus and sign of appreciation.

re 3) True again, I think at the time this templates were created Dick had something else in mind. I confess that I have manhandled this a bit. I will add more documentation.

re 4) This should indeed be fixed. Hopefully this did not happen to often.

re 5) This should be ok by now and should not happen again in the future. I think this was a special case. I will have a look at it again to make sure.

re 6) A lot of this was done by Dick at the beginning. However this should be on our list too.

re 7) I will mark it as obsolete. For historical reasons I would not like to delete it.

re 8) I have already commented on this. I think if we progress in translating, this should vanish too. At the moment I am not so much thinking about the superseded and obsolete documentation. That is something then we have to much time.

re 9) More voodoo? Are you sure? Do you have something specific in mind? The thing that just comes to my mind is a kind of Language portal where translations of a certain language gather and there docinfo overview is placed instead of user subpages like it is now. Before I forget: Yes, it is useful and encouraging!

For the beginning it can be just a tab in User namespace near the Edit and History tabs that shows the translation statistics for the given user. I know how to do such simple extensions. --Yury Katkov 00:53, 7 October 2011 (CEST)

re 10) Perhaps we could integrate Semantic Tasks into this. However I do not think that it is the best idea. I may put to much pressure on occasional translators and scare them away. Hmmm...

Right, it's inadmissible to be too bold and scare people with pop-up windows or bot messages in their Talk pages. How Do I get started manual

Reading comments here and on MW, it seems we have a lot of documentation available but for someone who is starting a journey with SMW it is overlay complicated and technical to get around it. Their should be an easy to follow How Do I get started (How Do I get started - project page) guide with plenty of visual aids, so people don't feel lost with the amount of information provided and you always can hint to the more technical manuals within this wiki.

Not that you should write it but as a senior guardian of this wiki you might take the lead in facilitating the idea, collect a table of contents, post a request for people to participate on the mailing list, so they can add their thoughts on the talk page.

For example, I found Help:Introduction to Semantic MediaWiki of less help for people who just starting as they won't find the answers their looking for. Watching the discussion on the mailing list and around SMW, I could see the first general hurdle for someone starting with SMW is the expression jungle of unfamiliar terms which needs some priority to deal with otherwise people will loose interest and sail way out of frustration. Stephan's Semantic Glossary might be of help (need to be activated on this wiki first) to give a visual tooltip aid that can explain terms while still on the page.

Other visual aids such as screen shots (hould use vector skin to avoid confusion), a powerpoint(ppt, odp) presentation (so requests like that from Wikimedia Hungary can be served swiftly) should accompanied this page.

How Do I get started should be a greeting card on how easily one can get familiar with Semantic Mediawiki.

Pre-defined message on talk page

You might have a look at Extension:PageNotice it could prove helpful to set up a message on every talk page before their are created and avoiding people sending bug reports on those pages. --MWJames 16:46, 20 November 2011 (CET)

Search and redirect of configuration parameters

In order to increase search relevancy, do we think it would help that for all the SMW, SRF related configuration parameters such as (smwgPageSpecialProperties) to create a redirect so that when one searches with the parameter one is redirected towards the right location or one is redirected to a aggregated list (short description, link to the original) with all configuration parameters available (I would prefer a list so we know all parameters are accounted for and next time a new one is introduced it gets added to the list). Either way searching for a specific parameter would lead to a more appropriate location of inquiry. --MWJames 09:38, 10 December 2011 (CET)

I guess right now it would only be useful to have a redirect to the respective configuration parameter on Help:Configuration on this wiki. I think Help:Configuration is a better solution than this one. The solution on mediawiki.org is only useful to some extent since they have a separate manual page for every configuration parameter. However we could do that here too and query for the parameters to show up in a table like we do it for Help:Result formats and thus supersede Help:Configuration as it is now. Heiya Yury, that looks great. Basically we should go for that. The header is a bit too dominant and should be decreased in size (icon and description). Additionally we need a smaller maximum width to cater for our tocs an boxes on the right side of the pages and one of the breaks at the bottom is avoidable. Sorting Months in Вики месяца

Hi! Something is wrong with sort by month in Wiki of the month table. Try to click on sort button in the Month column - it sorts alphabetically. Can that be repaired by using the Date type for Property:Wiki_of_month_local? Yury Katkov 23:25, 8 January 2012 (CET)

Heiya Yury, I am still thinking of a good way to do it. As I created this I gave preference to translated months over sorting capabilities. This cannot be changed by changing the type because this wiki only understands English. Thus it is only working for the English table. Some sort of voodoo is needed to change this. SIO vs subobjects

I just had some time to start building a reference table which allows you to compare the use of SIO to that of subobjects and to weigh their pros and cons. See my user page User:Cavila. Heiya Cavila, this is a very good idea. I must admit that I did not have a deep look at the #subobject parser function so far. This is a good opportunity for me to get it right too.
